Virtual Mind Walk: Pacific Sand Crabs
May 20 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am
We welcome guest presenter Gita R. Kolluru, PhD, Professor in the Biological Sciences Department at California Polytechnic State University. The thumb-sized pacific sand crab is a familiar and rapid moving resident of our local beaches.
This lecture will explore their relationship to the parasite Profilicollisaltmani. Three local beaches will be examined, focusing on the prevalence and abundance of this parasite in sand crabs, and investigating the synergistic effects of sand grain size (an important abiotic factor), parasite infection, body size and reproductive condition on burrowing speed in females.
We will take a close look at how abiotic and biotic factors influence burrowing and behavioral variation across locations.
