SLO LOCAL: Nate Long of Nate’s on Marsh

Ever since Nate Long was a kid he always loved food. Dinner was a family affair and he adored the experience of sharing a sit down meal with his entire family.

After high school, Nate moved to San Francisco. There, he worked his way up the top restaurants with acclaimed mentors like Chef Joseph Manzare of Postrio and Spago fame. Under the guidance of restaurateurs Joseph Manzare and Mary Klingbeil, he managed and marketed a number of celebrated restaurants including Globe, Zuppa, and Joey & Eddie’s. Driven to develop new skills, Nate coordinated private dining experiences, tended bar, curated impactful wine lists, and learned to ensure busy kitchens keep up with dining demands.

With his extensive restaurant background, Nate returned to his hometown of SLO County with the desire to curate foods, focus on product development, and brand management. Deep inside he had always wanted his own ”project.” When the pandemic hit, he leaped at the opportunity when Gennaro’s Grill & Garden became available in downtown SLO.

Nate began to create his own restaurant called, “Nate’s on Marsh.” The restaurant is a mashup of Nate’s love for polo bars, Zuppa in San Francisco, Ralph Lauren, horses, and all things equestrian. It’s an American restaurant with an Italian spirit. This 1908 colonial bungalow sports bold colors, wood finishes, and vibrant green printed wallpaper. He described the restaurant as,  “It’s so me. If you cut me open…Nate’s on marsh would come out. The inside of my body is lined with the wallpaper.”

You can take a deeper dive into the restaurant by following his social media account @natesonmarsh. The content is an ode to his love of classic films and pop culture. You’ll find Johnny Depp, Kim Kardashian, Jack Nicholson and other iconic film legends that inspired by his personal experiences and personal story.

NATES “PERSONAL MENU”

We asked Nate what his favorite items on the menu were. Of course he loves them all but he describes his taste similar to the song a  “Simple Man”  by Grouch.

  • His day to day meal- The Meatball – “Yumm town USA”
  • The pasta that’s hitting for him right now – Mushroom Carbonara
  • Craving meat? – The Rib Eye is a must
  • Drink of choice – The “Paper Plane” – Think George Clooney kicking back on the Almalfi Coast.
  • Dessert – The Chocolate Chip Cookie with Leo Leo Gelato  – So classic. This dessert is an ode to his father who loves to eat a bag of Oreos.

Make your reservations today or check our their new brunch menu available every Sunday from 10am to 2pm.
