Terrace Hill: Your Next Quick Escape in San Luis Obispo

Have you been to Terrace Hill? I went a couple of months ago, and honestly, I was blown away by the views—and even more surprised by how many of you haven’t checked it out yet. So, I headed back to show you exactly what the hike’s like!

Terrace Hill is tucked away in a quiet residential area, just around the corner from French Hospital. You’ll know you’re in the right spot when you see a row of cars parked along the sidewalk. The entrance is super easy to find, and right there you’ll get a handy map of the area. It’s a hidden gem that’s perfect for a quick escape from the daily grind.

Terrace Hill features a 0.9-mile loop that’s generally considered moderately challenging—and it takes around minutes to complete. To get from the base to the top is a short 3 minute walk at an incline. The incline is nothing too extreme. Just be ready for some rocky patches, and make sure you wear sturdy shoes so you don’t end up tripping over your own two feet.

A Few Fun Tidbits:

  • Birding, Hiking, Running, or Biking?
Whether you’re into birding, a brisk run, or even mountain biking, this trail has you covered. I even spotted someone walking their bike all the way up the hill!
  • Family-Friendly (Maybe!)
The climb isn’t too harsh, so it can be a fun outing with the kids. Though I’m not a parent, I’d love to hear from you—are strollers even doable here? (Parents, please share your experience in the comments!)
  • Dog Lovers, Rejoice!
It’s dog friendly too! They provide doggie bags and extra leashes if you’re in a pinch. Just remember, your pup needs to be on a leash. Leashes are are available at the entrance near the map.
  • Looking For Shade? – there’s not much shade along the trail, so bring your water and a hat if you’re planning on a sunny day adventure. Trust me, a little extra hydration goes a long way
  • What’s with the sheep & goats? – City of SLO participates in regenerative grazing for land management

When you reach the top, get ready for some seriously stunning views of San Luis Obispo. It’s the perfect spot to snap some pics, have a little picnic, or simply sit back and watch the sunset. There’s even a swing—yes, a swing—for that extra touch of fun. Just remember to leave the area better than you found it; let’s keep this gem clean and beautiful for everyone.
